Nanabush Nanabush or Waynaboozhoo is a cultural figure in Anishinabai mythology. Although Nanabush has many human-like characteristics, he is best described as a spiritual messenger and teacher. His persona is found in other Native American Indian cultures in the form of a Raven, Coyote, or Rabbit. Often referred to as a Trickster, Nanabush transcends between physical, abstract and spiritual realities. Stories and legends about the exploits and antics of Nanabush are important to the transmission of sacred knowledge, morals and ethics. In these stories, Nanabush takes on many shapes and forms and like humans, makes mistakes. The stories are often humourous and layered with multiple levels of meaning in the form of code. The coding of a story ensures that it can told to all ages with multiple levels of knowledge and understanding achieved. |
