TD BANK ACQUIRES ONE OF ACE’S SIGNATURE BANDOLIER BAGS FOR CONTEMPORARY ART COLLECTION

Ace’s Bandolier for Wiikwemkoong (2017) has been acquired for inclusion in the prominent TD Art Collection in Toronto. This work was recently included in two exhibitions: the Dance Collection Danse (Toronto) exhibition entitled By Invitiation Only, Conferderation and Reconcilation (2017) curated by Amy Bowring and Troy Emery Twigg; and in the Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina) exhibition URL:IRL (2018) curated by Blair Fornwald, Jennifer Matotek and Wendy Peart.

Bandolier for Wiikwemkoong (2017) features Ace’s signature electronic component floral work and embedded digital tablet. The work screens a 1925 silent film featuring Anishinaabe dancer’s performing in Wiikwemkoong, Odawa Mnis (Manitoulin Island) for visiting non-Indigenous bureaucrats. Ironically, the film was made in the same year that the Federal Government amended the Indian Act legislation making the wearing of regalia and traditional dance on-reserve illegal.

The TD Art Collection is a world class corporate fine art collection that began in 1968 with a primary focus to build a contemporary art collection for the newly built Toronto Dominion Centre designed by Mies van der Rohe officially opening in 1967. The modern structural design was perfectly suited for the presentation of contemporary art. Since then, the TD Art Collection has continued to grow and now boasts an impressive fine art collection of great diversity in both artists and media.
