THE COVERT COLLECTIVE FEATURES ACE IN NEW ESSAY BY CURATOR SUZANNE LUKE

Barry Ace – curated. (essay)

The COVERT Collective is a gathering of visual art curators from across Canada, sharing the work of artists they love, and work that inspires them. Digitally platformed and branded as curated. the ad hoc group celebrates the artists and work that makes them think.

Suzanne Luke holds a BFA in Art and Art History from the University of Toronto and a MA in Communication Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University. During her tenure as University Curator at Wilfrid Laurier University, she has articulated and implemented an innovative and diverse vision for ongoing scholarship around contemporary and Indigenous art practices.

In her essay, Luke writes, “There is never an easy or straightforward way to honour one’s heritage and acknowledge past history. Ultimately, you strive to share a narrative that will impart knowledge, express the uniqueness of your cultural identity, and recognize the generational traditions that have helped to formulate who you have become. Barry Ace not only achieves these goals but goes beyond to reconstruct notions of Indigenous art-making and challenge viewers to re-examine notions of cultural stasis in the most eloquent and beautiful way.”
